Cool, crisp, and delightfully refreshing — The Looking Glass is our latest Captain's Cup creation, inspired by summer afternoons on San Francisco Bay when the sailing is beautiful, the company is even better, and nobody is quite ready for the adventure to end.
There is something about a summer afternoon on San Francisco Bay that changes the way you see the world.
Perhaps it's the sunlight dancing across the water.
The breeze filling the sails.
Or the moment when the city slips behind you and the familiar suddenly feels extraordinary.
Aboard Rabbit Hole, we've learned that sometimes all it takes is a little change of perspective to discover something wonderful.
And that brings us to our latest addition to The Captain's Cup.
Meet The Looking Glass.
Cool, crisp, and delightfully refreshing, this cucumber, mint, and lime cocktail is inspired by those summer days when the sailing is beautiful, the company is even better, and nobody is quite ready for the adventure to end.
Through the Looking Glass
In Lewis Carroll's *Through the Looking-Glass*, Alice discovers a world where familiar things appear just a little different.
Here at Rabbit Hole Sailing, we think sailing offers a bit of that same magic.
From shore, San Francisco Bay is a familiar landscape of bridges, islands, ferries, and bustling waterfronts.
But step aboard a sailboat, cast off the dock lines, and everything changes.
The skyline becomes a backdrop.
The wind becomes your guide.
And destinations you've visited a hundred times suddenly feel like new discoveries.
The Looking Glass celebrates that feeling.
A little curiosity. A fresh perspective. And something wonderfully unexpected waiting just around the corner.
The Captain's Cup: The Looking Glass
*A crisp, botanical summer refresher with cucumber, mint, lime, and a sparkling finish.*
Ingredients | Makes One Cocktail
2 oz gin
¾ oz freshly squeezed lime juice
½ oz simple syrup
3 thin cucumber slices, plus a ribbon for garnish
5–6 fresh mint leaves
2–3 oz chilled sparkling water
Ice, fresh mint sprig, and lime wheel for garnish
The Method
Add the cucumber slices, mint leaves, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
Gently muddle to release the cucumber and mint flavors — no need to pulverize them.
Add the gin, fresh lime juice, and ice.
Shake until thoroughly chilled.
Double-strain into a tall glass filled with fresh ice.
Top with chilled sparkling water and give it a gentle stir.
Garnish with a long cucumber ribbon, a fresh mint sprig, and a lime wheel.
The Captain's Touch
Use a vegetable peeler to create a long, thin cucumber ribbon. Curl it around the inside of the glass before adding the ice.
The ribbon catches the light beautifully and gives the drink its signature looking-glass appearance.
For a softer, more floral variation, replace the simple syrup with ½ oz elderflower liqueur. The result is slightly sweeter and wonderfully aromatic.
A Little Wonderland Without the Gin
Every good Captain's Cup deserves a nonalcoholic companion.
The Looking Glass, Clear Reflection
¾ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz simple syrup
3 cucumber slices
5–6 fresh mint leaves
4–5 oz chilled sparkling water
Ice and the same fresh garnishes
Gently muddle the cucumber, mint, and syrup. Add lime juice, strain over fresh ice, and top with sparkling water.
All the sparkle, all the refreshment, and none of the gin.
Perfect for the skipper, the crew, or anyone who simply prefers a different kind of summer sip.
Best Enjoyed After the Sails Come Down
The Looking Glass is made for those golden moments after a wonderful day on the water.
When the dock lines are secure.
The sails are put away.
The crew is swapping stories about the day's adventures.
And someone inevitably says, "We should do that again."
It's the kind of drink that invites you to linger a little longer, laugh a little louder, and appreciate the simple pleasure of being together.
Because the best part of sailing isn't always the destination.
Sometimes it's the people beside you and the perspective you gain along the way.
The Captain's Toast
