Seven adventures beyond the Golden Gate. From carefully planned Coastal Passage Making cruises to long summer days preparing for Royal Yachtmaster Ocean exams, Rabbit Hole's offshore adventures have been filled with preparation, learning, exhilarating sailing, and plenty of smiles. Both groups have wrapped up their season, and we're already looking forward to more adventures in 2027.
There is something magical about sailing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
Behind you lies San Francisco Bay, with its familiar landmarks, busy shipping lanes, and ever-changing conditions.
Ahead lies the Pacific Ocean.
And suddenly, the adventure feels just a little bigger.
For Rabbit Hole Sailing, expanding our adventures beyond the Gate was something we worked toward from the beginning. It required planning, preparation, and a fair amount of persistence to secure the appropriate insurance coverage.
But the effort was worth it.
Seven Out-the-Gate cruises later, the smiles have said it all.
Five CPM Adventures: The Passage Begins Before You Leave the Dock
Five of our offshore outings were with sailors pursuing Coastal Passage Making (CPM) experience.
And one of the most important lessons of passage making is that the adventure begins long before the boat leaves the marina.
There were planning meetings over Zoom, discussions about routes and conditions, and plenty of thought given to what could happen along the way.
Sail plans were submitted.
Contingency plans were developed.
Provisioning was considered carefully.
Because heading into the Pacific is not simply a matter of pointing the bow west and seeing what happens.
It is about understanding the conditions, preparing the crew, and making thoughtful decisions.
An Early Start, a Bigger Adventure
One approach was especially memorable.
Rather than beginning the entire journey from the home marina in the morning, the crew could provision, prepare the boat, and position themselves near the Golden Gate the evening before.
An overnight anchorage allowed the crew to be ready for an early departure the following day, making the most of the planned sailing window.
It is a wonderful example of how thoughtful preparation can expand what is possible.
The planning itself becomes part of the learning experience.
When should we leave?
What weather window are we looking for?
What if the conditions change?
Where are our alternatives?
How much time do we realistically have?
These are the kinds of questions that turn a sailing outing into meaningful passage-making experience.
And they are exactly the questions that good sailors learn to ask.
Two More Adventures: Preparing for Royal Yachtmaster Ocean
Then came another exciting opportunity.
Two additional Out-the-Gate outings involved sailors preparing for Royal Yachtmaster Ocean passage exams in Italy.
These sailors had a different set of goals.
They were looking to build offshore experience, take advantage of favorable conditions, and make the most of their time on the water.
And when the summer winds cooperated, they certainly made the most of them.
The crew caught some excellent sailing conditions and covered impressive distances during single, very long summer days.
Those are the kinds of days that remind you just how much ground a capable sailboat can cover when the conditions, planning, and crew all come together.
Long hours under sail.
A horizon that seems to stretch forever.
The satisfaction of watching the miles accumulate.
And the experience of managing a boat and crew beyond the familiar waters of the Bay.
It is a different kind of sailing adventure, but one built on the same foundations of preparation, seamanship, and good judgment.
The Golden Gate Is More Than a Landmark
For many sailors, the Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic part of sailing San Francisco Bay.
But passing beneath it and continuing into the Pacific represents something more.
The conditions outside the Gate can be dramatically different from those inside the Bay.
Ocean swell, currents, wind, visibility, traffic, and changing weather all deserve careful consideration.
That is why we place so much importance on preparation, vessel familiarity, appropriate qualifications, and thoughtful decision-making.
A successful offshore adventure is not measured only in miles sailed.
It is also measured in the quality of the decisions made along the way.
Sometimes the best decision is to go.
Sometimes it is to wait.
And sometimes it is to change the plan entirely.
That is all part of good seamanship.
Worth Every Bit of the Effort
Making Out-the-Gate sailing possible through Rabbit Hole Sailing was not something that happened overnight.
We worked hard to secure the insurance coverage needed to support these opportunities while maintaining the operating requirements and safeguards appropriate to the vessel and the waters involved.
There were details to work through, questions to answer, and boundaries to establish.
But we believed these experiences were worth pursuing.
And watching sailors return from their adventures with new experience, new confidence, wonderful stories, and enormous smiles has made all that effort worthwhile.
Five outings with the CPM sailors.
Two more with the Yachtmaster candidates.
Seven opportunities to venture beyond the familiar.
And seven reminders of why we love helping people get out on the water.
Until Next Season!
Both groups have wrapped up their Out-the-Gate adventures for the 2026 season, but the excitement certainly hasn't faded.
From the careful preparation and early departures of our CPM sailors to the long, exhilarating summer days with the Yachtmaster candidates, these outings have been some of the highlights of our sailing season.
We're already looking forward to next season and the opportunity to help more sailors experience what lies beyond the Golden Gate.
Whether you're working toward an advanced sailing qualification, building offshore experience, or simply ready to take your sailing adventures a little farther, we'd love to help you explore what's possible.
Here's to new crews, new adventures, and more smiles beyond the Gate!
Here's to the Next Adventure
Every sailor's journey is different.
For some, the next step is becoming more comfortable handling a cruising yacht on San Francisco Bay.
For others, it is building the skills and experience needed to venture farther.
And for some, it is preparing for the challenge of offshore passage making and advanced sailing qualifications.
Wherever that journey leads, the same principles apply.
Prepare thoughtfully.
Keep learning.
Respect the conditions.
Take care of your crew.
And never lose that sense of wonder.
Because sometimes the most memorable adventures begin just beyond the Gate.
Wonder awaits. Seize it.
