Sail Back Sunday
What better way to look back that to reviist a previous story of a family sail on SV Rabbit Hole to to Down Town Petaluma form the cental Bay. This story is a beautiful reminder of how accessible and magical Bay Area cruising can be when shared with the people you love.
Here’s KL’s story from September 21, 2023:
Most of you know me from the monthly Crew Connect member sails, but I actually spend most of my sailing time with my family. In June this year, we decided to try something new and journey up the Petaluma River. This was a gorgeous trip— passing vineyards and idyllic scenery all the way to the downtown guest docks. Petaluma is a family-friendly town, but what’s even better, is that the docks about the downtown core with cute cafes, restaurants, and shops.#FamilySailing

There is even a playground within walking distance for the kids. The new Floathouse at the docks has kayaks and other water toys for rent. And the sunsets were gorgeous. For 17 years, the river silted and was as shallow as two-feet in parts, but in 2021/2022, the Army Corps of Engineers commenced a project to bring economic vitality back to Petaluma and the river was dredged all the way to downtown. It is now 8-12 feet at zero tide and navigable.

Keep a sharp eye on your depth finder and know your way around Navionics SonarCharts. Plan your cruise so you have at least 2.0’ of tide while on the river, reserve your bridge opening with the City of Petaluma ahead of time, and study your route. You will be rewarded with a unique sailing experience in the Bay Area that hasn’t been achievable in a long time.

Curiosity has a way of carrying us farther than planned. Whether you’re here to learn, explore, or simply enjoy time on the water, we’re glad you’ve found your way to Rabbit Hole.
