Before You Cast Off – Answers to the questions we hear most often from sailors planning their next adventure.
Do I have to be a member to charter Rabbit Hole?
No.
Rabbit Hole Sailing does not require memberships, initiation fees, or annual dues.
Simply complete the approval process, reserve an available date, assemble your qualified crew, and enjoy your time on the water.
How do I become approved to charter SV Rabbit Hole?
Approval is based on your sailing experience, certifications, and demonstrated ability.
Many sailors are approved through documented experience and references, while others choose to complete a Check-Out Sail aboard SV Rabbit Hole.
Our goal is to help qualified sailors get on the water safely—not to create unnecessary barriers.

What if I don’t have enough qualified crew?
No Problem!
You’re not alone—many sailors are looking for additional crew, whether for a day sail, a charter, or simply to gain more experience.
Rabbit Hole Sailing hosts the Wayfinder Collaborative – Alameda Crew Search Google Group, where sailors can connect with others seeking crew opportunities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
Whether you’re looking for an experienced first mate, additional qualified crew, or simply hoping to meet other sailors, the Crew Search Group is a great place to start.
If your group doesn’t yet meet our minimum charter requirements, we may also recommend a Check-Out Sail, instructor-led skill development, or other pathways to help you become charter-ready.

Can beginners charter the boat?
Bareboat charters require an approved skipper and qualified crew.
If you’re new to sailing, we recommend beginning with instructor-led skill development or enrolling in a US Sailing certification course through Pacific Wayfinder Sailing Academy.
What is a Check-Out Sail?
A Check-Out Sail is a practical evaluation conducted aboard SV Rabbit Hole.
It familiarizes you with the vessel while allowing us to evaluate your boat handling, docking, sail handling, navigation, safety knowledge, and overall seamanship.
Many experienced sailors complete a Check-Out Sail before their first charter.
Can I hire an instructor or captain?
Rabbit Hole Sailing offers instructor-led skill development and select captained sailing experiences, subject to availability.
Any paid captain or instructor aboard SV Rabbit Hole must be specifically approved and assigned by Rabbit Hole Sailing. Charterers may not independently hire or bring aboard a paid captain or instructor.
Whether you are building confidence, practicing docking, preparing for a coastal passage, or simply prefer having an experienced professional aboard, contact us to discuss the appropriate option for your sail.
Where can I sail?
SV Rabbit Hole is based in Alameda, California, providing convenient access to San Francisco Bay.
Depending on your qualifications, weather conditions, and charter approval, itineraries may include Angel Island, Sausalito, the Central Bay, the Golden Gate, San Pablo Bay, the Delta, and approved coastal destinations.
Do you offer sailing lessons?
Rabbit Hole Sailing specializes in instructor-led skill development and practical sailing experiences.
Formal US Sailing certification courses are offered through our educational partner, Pacific Wayfinder Sailing Academy.
Together, the two organizations provide a complete pathway from your first sailing experience through advanced cruising and passagemaking.
What if SV Rabbit Hole isn’t the right boat?
Every sailing adventure is different.
Through relationships with other independently owned, owner-operated charter companies, we can often help connect you with a vessel that better matches your sailing goals.
If we don’t have the perfect boat for your adventure, we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.
How do I reserve a charter?
Simply contact us by phone or email.
